It’s difficult to know sometimes whether you’re part of a ‘healthy’ high-performing team.
And I say ‘healthy’ deliberately, because not only does having a people-focused, holistic approach to employee health produce better high-performance results in the short & long term, there’s a lot of debate around what a great team looks and feels like.
I believe team’s have the opportunity to think and operate like progressive sports team.
Is there a one-size-fits-all? No? There are some principles to learn from, I think there might be.
A holistic focus on people development, a clearly defined goal, ethical leadership, high-trust and belonging, and a deep sense of purpose. Sounds simple and achievable right, yet it’s only when you unpick in the context of your unique culture, that we see the challenge we face.
If you’d like to jump straight in a take the Team Culture Health Assessment™, jump straight in.
Now of course, in some cases, I’d be the first to say that some sports have been the culprits for awful standards of culture.
But in some cases with my time in elite sport, there are exemplar gold standards.
Great sporting organisations balance the relentless drive for excellence and gold medal standards, yet do so with a people-centred, conscious leadership style, care and belonging, kindness and compassion.
Feedback and friction, is coupled with fairness and fulfilment because trust and empathy have been deliberately cultivated in every process and conversation. It’s not easy, but there’s no alternative.
Since I’ve transitioned from my life in high-performance sport into the world of business sharing my insights, I’ve enjoyed many conversations around culture, leadership, and team dynamics.
And one thing that struck me, like sport, was the similarities in goal focus, strategy, and innovation. A constant strive for growth and performance, hitting margins, satisfying stakeholders, and relentless in pursuit of excellence. And clear analytics for measuring financials and risk.
When I’ve asked leaders in large organisations what matters when building a high-performance team, it goes back to people, trust, and leading people.
Yet, when it comes to tracking and monitoring team culture health, there’s silence. In fact, 68% of people in my recent LinkedIn poll said they had no way of tracking the health of it’s team culture behaviours.
That’s why we’ve built a tool to help you do that. It’s free and take 5 minutes to complete.
It’s designed to provide a snapshot analysis of your team culture health, from your unique perspective. A self-assessment, in your eyes, of it’s current status.
You might be surprised by the analysis, and it’s proven to have been helpful for those who have completed the assessment in raising awareness on key areas to strengthen and develop.
